Michael Neill has a long-standing connection to the stage, particularly in classical theatre. He began performing in the 1960s and ’70s, including a role in the 1972 television drama Pukemanu, before stepping away to concentrate on his academic path. He went on to become Professor of English at the University of Auckland, developing an international reputation in the study of Shakespeare and early modern drama.
In 2013, Michael returned to acting to play the title role in King Lear for the University of Auckland’s Summer Shakespeare 50th Anniversary, directed by acclaimed actor-director Lisa Harrow. His performance was shaped by decades of deep textual understanding and a natural command of classical language.
